What Is Zinc Die Casting?

Zinc die casting is a manufacturing technique where molten zinc is forced into a steel mold designed to produce components of specific shapes and dimensions. The resulting zinc castings inherit the full range of zinc's mechanical properties, including its durability and visual characteristics. Zinc alloys are preferred in this process due to their flexibility, resistance to impact, and low melting temperature, making them highly suitable for casting applications.

Advantages of Zinc Die Casting

High Precision and Dimensional Accuracy

One of the key advantages of zinc die casting is its ability to achieve high precision and dimensional accuracy. The process allows for tight tolerances, ensuring that the final parts meet the required specifications. This level of precision is crucial in industries where a precise fit and functionality are paramount.

Excellent Surface Finish and Aesthetic Appeal

Zinc die casting offers exceptional surface finish options, making it ideal for parts that require a visually appealing appearance. The process allows for the creation of smooth surfaces, intricate details, and textures, enhancing the overall aesthetics of the final product. Whether it’s a polished finish or a specific texture, zinc die casting can deliver the desired visual impact.

Superior Strength and Durability

Despite its lightweight nature, zinc die casting produces parts with remarkable strength and durability. Zinc alloys possess excellent mechanical properties, offering high tensile strength and impact resistance. This makes zinc die castings suitable for applications where structural integrity and longevity are crucial factors.

Cost-Effectiveness and Production Efficiency

Zinc die casting provides cost-effective solutions for manufacturing custom parts. The high-speed production capabilities of the process enable large quantities of parts to be produced quickly, reducing production costs per unit. Additionally, the longevity and reliability of zinc die castings minimize maintenance and replacement expenses over time.

Steps Of The Zinc Die Casting Process

Generally, zinc alloy die casting is a hot chamber die casting process. While there are variations in the process based on part size and machine types, the general mechanism is highlighted below:
Preparing the Die
Clean the die-cast mold to remove impurities. Afterward, lubricate the die for better ejection of the cast part after cooling. Conclude this step by clamping the die with high pressure.
Injection
Melt the zinc alloy and pour it into the injection machine’s shot chamber. Note that the shot chamber will be hot, as zinc casting is a hot chamber die casting process. Afterward, inject the molten zinc material into the die-cast mold at high pressure.
Cooling and Ejection
Allow the zinc to cool in the die-cast mold to take its shape. Unclamp the mold to eject the solid zinc casting.
Note: Ensure the casting cools and solidifies before ejection.
Trimming
Alongside other finishing processes, trimming involves the removal of excess metal that occurs due to die casting defects. Trimming can be achieved using a trim die, saw, or other methods.

When to Choose Zinc Die Casting for Your Project

Zinc die casting is a good choice for your project if you need parts that have:

Zinc Alloy Hardware

Thin Walls

With zinc die casting, you can create parts with thin walls (as low as 0.3 mm) thanks to its high fluidity and low injection pressure. This allows you to save on weight and material costs without compromising strength and rigidity.

Harsh Environmental Conditions

Zinc die casting can produce parts that endure harsh environmental conditions, such as humidity, salt spray, or chemicals, due to zinc's high corrosion resistance and durability. Additionally, zinc has high hardness and impact resistance, meaning your parts can resist wear and tear better than those made from other metals.

Lesser Residual Stress

Zinc is an excellent material for making parts with intricate shapes and fine details. It flows easily and requires less pressure to inject into the mold. Furthermore, it has a lower melting point, which reduces the chance of damaging or corroding the mold. This can save you money and time on die cast mold maintenance and replacement.

Faster Production

One of the advantages of using zinc for die casting is its faster production speed. Zinc has a lower melting point and a higher solidification rate than aluminum, allowing it to fill the mold more quickly and efficiently. Additionally, zinc works well with the hot chamber process, which reduces the cycle time and production costs of die casting.

Construction: Zinc die casting is utilized in the construction industry for producing hardware such as locks, hinges, and handles.
Zinc die casting is truly a versatile material that can be used in various applications across different industries. Its unique properties make it an ideal choice for many manufacturing needs.

Is Zinc Die Casting an Environmentally Friendly Option?

Zinc die casting is an excellent manufacturing technique that produces a wide variety of components and products. Even better, it is environmentally friendly and brings numerous advantages to both manufacturers and consumers. Here’s why:

01/

Recyclability: Zinc alloys are highly recyclable materials, meaning they can be melted down and reused. This not only saves resources but also reduces waste going to landfills—a win-win situation!

02/

Non-toxic: Zinc is a safe, non-toxic metal that doesn’t contain harmful chemicals like lead. This makes it a safer and more environmentally friendly option compared to other materials.

03/

Energy Efficiency: Compared to other manufacturing processes, zinc die casting requires less energy. The low melting point of the zinc alloy means less energy is needed during the melting and casting process. Talk about energy efficiency!

04/

Durability: Die-cast zinc parts are built to last. They’re known for their high durability and longevity, which means they don’t need to be replaced as often. This translates to a smaller environmental footprint for the manufacturing process.

Temperature
The recommended furnace temperature for zinc alloy is 415-430 °C. The upper limit of the die-casting temperature for thin-wall parts and complex parts should not exceed 430 °C. A higher furnace temperature will increase the amount of slag produced. Experienced die-casting workers observe the melt with the naked eye based on the following three aspects:

  • If the molten liquid is not too viscous and remains clear after slag scraping, and the slag does not rise quickly, this indicates that the temperature is appropriate.
  • If the melt is too viscous, the temperature is too low.
  • If, after slag scraping, a layer of white frost appears on the liquid surface, and the liquid zinc turns red while the slag rises too quickly, this indicates that the temperature is too high and should be adjusted in time.

Control
Control can be implemented from the following four aspects:

  • If there is any discrepancy between the actual temperature of the melting furnace and the displayed temperature, a portable thermometer should be used to regularly check the melting furnace temperature.
  • A centralized melting furnace and die-casting machine furnace can be used as holding furnaces to avoid significant temperature changes caused by directly adding zinc ingots to the zinc pot. Centralized melting ensures the stability of alloy composition. Alternatively, an advanced automatic metal liquid feeding system can maintain stable feeding speed, alloy liquid temperature, and liquid level height in the zinc pot.
  • If zinc is added directly to the pot, it is advisable to add the entire alloy ingot at once instead of small ingots multiple times, which can reduce temperature fluctuations caused by feeding.
  • Zinc alloy ingots should be preheated.

Peripheral Tools
It is not allowed to use iron crucibles or iron operating tools to contact the alloy liquid. Stainless steel spoons should be used.
